Nearly 700 Oregon school leaders participated in the three-day 35th Annual COSA Professional Development Conference at Seaside last week. Attendees enjoyed presentations from keynote speakers Tony Wagner, Marcia Tate, Todd Whitaker and Nancy Hungerford; gained knowledge during more than 45 breakout sessions offered by the state's leading educators, including critical information about ARRA provided by ODE Chief Policy Officer Pat Burk; and participated in networking events such as the Presidents Reception, Family Fun Night and the COSA Classic Golf Tournament.
Annual award winners were honored, including Middle School Principal of the Year Chris Hill (Oregon City; Elementary School Principal of the Year Pam Zaklan (Medford); High School Principal of the Year Bob Bolden (Eugene); Superintendent of the Year Juli DiChiro (Ashland); Assistant Principal of the Year Jerry Fitzpatrick (Forest Grove); OACOA Achievement of Excellence Award winner Art Anderson (Northwest Regional ESD); Bev Gladder Mentorship Award winner Petrea Hagen-Hilden (Tigard-Tualatin); OASE Excellence in Curriculum Leadership Award winner South Lane School District; and Dave Arnold Vendor Award winner Tim Kadlec of ING, U.S., Financial Services. COSA Executive Director Kent Hunsaker was the surprise (to him, at least) winner of the COSA President's Award, selected and presented by COSA President Karen Goirigolzarri.
New
COSA President Mike Donnelly (Springfield) was sworn in, as were new
OASE President Paula Radich (Newberg), OACOA President Art Anderson
(NWRESD), OASSA President Bryan Starr (Scio) and OESPA President Tim
Larkin South Umpqua. New NAESP President-Elect Bard Chester was
recognized.
Seventy-one
exhibitors contributed to the success of the conference. COSA staff
members were assisted by 32 volunteers. Family fun night participants
consumed 284 hot dogs. The COSA Bookstore sold hundreds of books for
summer professional reading.
