The Oregon House voted 56-0 today in favor of two bills that allocate a combined $6.245 billion for K-12 funding in the 2007-09 biennium. House Bill 5020 provides $5.985 billion to the State School Fund, and House Bill 5021 provides $260 million to the School Improvement Fund. The bills now go to the Senate, where a vote is expected within the next week.
Kent Hunsaker said, "and we're also working with the Department so we can share the School Improvement Fund application process." The combined $6.245 billion for schools is a $940 million (17.7 percent) increase over the current biennium. "This is definitely a step forward after several legislative sessions of funding retreat," Hunsaker said. "That said, we know it's only a step, and we're going to continue to work with our education partners to make sure that we make even more progress in the next session." |
