Thirty-eight new Oregon school principals spent two-and-a-half days last week gathering knowledge and skills from experienced educational leaders during the COSA's Inaugural Leadership Academy for Beginning Principals.

Experienced superintendents and principals shared such topics as: 

• nurturing excellence in curriculum and instruction,
• developing a common mission and vision in your school,
• technology issues such as my space and cyber-bullying,
• how to build a community of learners in a diverse community,
• ethics in leadership, and
• practical information on how to navigate their school year and stay on top of the curve.

Speakers from TSPC, OBSA, OEA, OSEA participated as well.  In addition to gaining a wealth of knowledge, new bonds were formed among participants. 

"It was exciting to see new principals from though out the state sharing information and friendship," COSA Director of Professional Development Colin Cameron said.  "They will be a great support to each other during their journey as new principals."

Two additional sections of the academy will take place in October and March to give added support to our new principals.  Topics will focus on supervision and evaluation, hiring practices, and budget and finance.
