|South Lane receives Excellence in Curriculum Leadership Award|
South Lane School District received the 2009 OASE Excellence in Curriculum Leadership Award at the Oregon School Boards Association Convention on Saturday. Superintendent Krista Parent and project directors Julie De Pauw and Todd Hamilton were recognized for their “Studio Classroom Project.”
The studio classroom project is a powerful professional development strategy that takes place in a live classroom, generating discussions about the design and implementation of lessons and the subsequent effect the lesson has on student learning. The district has had a “Writing Studio” and a “Math Studio” in place for two years. A “Leadership Studio” is planned for this year. Since the implementation, scores on the Oregon statewide assessments in reading and math have improved significantly, as have oral reading fluency scores at the secondary level.
The OASE Excellence in Curriculum Leadership Award recognizes best practices in a district that leads to enhanced student achievement. These practices may often be adapted for use in other districts, as is the case with this year’s winning project.
