Developing Professional Learning Teams "Essentials for Success"

The annual Principals Conference is set for Sunday and Monday, October 18-19, 2009 at Sunriver.  The program for this conference had been developed with feedback from COSA members making sure the content targets K-12 principals needs and priorities.  Principals are encouraged to bring a leadership team from their building.

Participants will work with conference presenters Janel Keating and Bob Eaker throughout the entire conference.  Their presentation is designed to build a deep, rich understanding of a professional learning community and offer a number of practical suggestions for moving school/district along a continuum from “knowing” to “doing”.

Keynote Speakers: Janel Keating, Bob Eaker - October 18-19, 2009

Given the fact that there is unprecedented agreement among researchers and practitioners that professional learning communities offer our best hope for improving schools, it might be said that the PLC concept is an idea whose time has come. This conference is designed to build a deep, rich  understanding of a professional learning community and offer a number of practical suggestions for moving your school/district along a continuum from “knowing” about PLCs to “doing” the work of implementation, to ultimately “being” a professional learning community. Sessions will highlight how to embed the Three Big Ideas that drive the culture of a PLC – Focus on Learning – Focus on Collaboration – Focus on Results into the day to day culture of your school and district. In short, you will learn how a professional learning community is a collaborative culture that utilizes high-performing teams to continually improve learning levels of both students and adults by engaging in collective inquiry and experimentation and taking collective responsibility for results.

The three areas of emphasis are:
  1. Insuring Learning: The relationship among district offce, principals, team leaders and teams
  2. Common Formative Assessments: Then what?
  3. The Big Trifecta: What hinders learning?  Grading - Homework - Scheduling
Bonus: Team worktime will be provided.  Teams are encouraged to bring data from a recent Formative Assessment.
