Series Description
This three-part virtual workshop equips educational leaders to advance bilingualism and biliteracy by exploring the essential systems and structures that sustain equitable dual language immersion programs.
Grounded in asset-based and culturally sustaining leadership practices, participants will engage with a comprehensive framework to evaluate and strengthen key program elements.
Attendees will deepen their understanding of the essential attributes of multilingual leaders, learning how to effectively support dual language educators and foster meaningful family and community engagement across diverse linguistic backgrounds.
The series will also address common challenges in dual language education and provide practical strategies to ensure equitable access and participation. Leaders will explore curriculum frameworks that support bilingual development, alongside assessment systems that monitor progress in both languages, enabling data-driven decisions for continuous improvement.
By the end of the series, participants will be equipped with actionable strategies and tools to elevate their dual language immersion programs, strengthen community partnerships, and ensure equitable opportunities for multilingual learners.
Session Outlines
Session 1: Strategic and Visionary Leadership in Biliteracy Programs | September 30, 12:00–1:00 PM PT
This session introduces the essential attributes of multilingual leaders and lays the foundation for equity-centered leadership. Leaders will explore program models, language allocation frameworks, and the “non-negotiables” of dual language education, while shifting from monolingual to multilingual mindsets.
Session 2: Instructional Leadership and Data-Informed Practices | October 7, 12:00–1:00 PM PT
This session focuses on instructional leadership and data-informed decision-making. Leaders will examine curriculum frameworks, assessment systems, and biliteracy practices that support cross-linguistic transfer, multicultural connections, and culturally responsive instruction.
Session 3: Building Capacity and Sustaining Biliteracy Programs | November 4, 12:00–1:00 PM PT (TBD)
The final session emphasizes long-term program sustainability through leadership development, professional learning, family engagement, and advocacy. Leaders will create short- and long-term action plans to ensure the growth and success of dual language programs.
Presenter Bio
Dr. Rocio del Castillo-Perez is the author of Teaching Reading in Spanish: A Linguistically Authentic Framework for Emerging Multilinguals. She has extensive experience in special education, bilingual, and dual language programs, and currently serves as Assistant Superintendent for Language and Culture in a large unit district in Northwest Illinois, while also teaching at the university level.
As Founder of Via Educational Consulting, Dr. del Castillo-Perez provides technical assistance and professional development to schools and districts nationwide. She co-authored Mosaico for i-Ready, a Spanish foundational literacy program for Grades K–2. She also serves on the board of the Illinois Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (IALAS), advancing Latino leadership and educational equity.
