|Third keynote to present on assessment of -- and for -- learning|
As the lines of accountability blur among members of the educational team serving students with multiple issues, the need for understanding the role of evaluation within this context becomes paramount.
In the chapter he wrote in “On Common Ground" (NES 2005, by DuFour, Eaker and DuFour), the 32nd Annual COSA Seaside Conference's third general session keynote speake, Dr. Rick Stiggins, presents important information on the role of assessment of learning and assessment for learning. Stiggins will help attendees at 8:30 a.m. Friday session understand the importance of both of these concepts in serving the needs of all students.
In 1992, Stiggins founded Assessment Training Institute to provide the professional development teachers and school leaders need as they face the challenges of day-to-day classroom assessment. He helps teachers gather accurate information about student achievement and use that information to benefit (not just grade and sort) their students. The most unique part of his vision is the need to involve students deeply in the classroom assessment process to build their confidence and maximize their achievement.
Prior to Stiggins' remarks Friday morning, COSA will honor Oregon Middle School Principal of the Year, Clarice Schorzman of Colton Middle School.Following the third general session, attendees can visit vendor booths. At 10:30, the Round IV Breakout Sessions take place in the Convention Center, the Shilo Inn, the Best Western and the Lutheran Church.
