Creating Safe and Equitable Learning Environments: Implementing OSEP's Behavior Intervention Guidance

School discipline policies aim to create safe and equitable learning environments for all students. However, when these policies are not implemented effectively, they can lead to significant negative consequences, including increased dropout rates and decreased student achievement.

Equitable alternatives to removals are necessary so students experiencing disabilities can thrive. The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) recently released new guidance on behavior intervention for students with disabilities, providing critical updates and recommendations for IEP teams to consider when developing behavior plans for students with diverse needs.

In this session, we will explore recent federal guidance on behavior intervention and provide practical strategies for implementing these recommendations in IEP development. Topics covered will include the use of positive behavior supports, functional behavior assessments, and evidence-based interventions. We will also discuss the importance of ongoing monitoring and data collection to ensure the effectiveness of behavior plans.
