We are seeking a Director for our Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the Oregon Department of Education.
The major activities of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion are to ensure that ODE’s Equity Initiatives and Programs are implemented and provide guidance and assistance to Oregon school districts, Education Service District’s and also provide supports to ODE internally.
Our office is an office of powerful and passionate individuals who are committed to restructuring and dismantling of systems and institutions that create the dichotomy of beneficiaries and the oppressed and marginalized. We work with various equity-focused and culture specific projects, enacted through legislation and implemented with partners across the agency. Our goal is to develop partnerships to provide support, technical assistance, and funding to districts, ESDs, and Community Based Organizations to improve the learning and experience of students and families from communities that are currently and historically harmed and marginalized by educational systems.
As the Director in the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, you provide strategic counsel to the Assistant Superintendent while assuming significant day-to-day responsibilities for projects and tasks within the Office and advancing and maintaining cross agency, district, and community relationships.
You lead grant/contract activities and program/initiative teams within the Office’s purview. This includes directing and monitoring compliance with established policies, objectives, program priorities, and applicable laws/rules/regulations, as well as managing community and advisory committee engagement and providing technical assistance within and outside of the Office/agency to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements. You also support the Assistant Superintendent in hiring teams, drafting Oregon Administrative Rules, and developing the policies and practices need to successfully implement initiatives within the office and across the agency.
What are we looking for?
Candidates who are the most competitive will possess a compelling combination of the following background, skills, and experience:
● A leader with at least four years of management experience in a public or private organization which included responsibility for each of the following: a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, and d) budget preparation: OR three years of management experience in a public or private organization which included responsibility for each of the following: a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, and d) budget preparation AND 45-48 quarter hours (30-32 semester hours) of graduate level coursework in management.
● Effective people management. The ability to manage situations and tailor approach to the individual's skills, needs and performance. Demonstrated ability to see the importance of role modeling. The ability to coach. Ability to provide an inclusive workplace that fosters the development of others, facilitates cooperation and teamwork, and supports constructive resolution of conflicts.
● Strong background in equity, diversity, and inclusion (e.g., experience serving on and/or leading an equity team in government, non-profits, district/school environments; experience in pre-K-20 teaching and/or administration)
● Strong research background in culturally responsive pedagogy, closing achievement and opportunity gaps for students of color, curriculum development for diverse populations of students, and multicultural education
● Excellent budget and analysis skills, including experience in fiscal and grant management of large-scale initiatives
● Experience in applying web technology as a communication tool
● Strong facilitation/collaboration skills
● Knowledge of local, state, and federal policies and programs
● Working knowledge of presentation software
● Ability to engage and establish effective relationships with administrators, teachers, parents, community organizations, institutions of higher education, and colleagues, including experience coordinating and facilitating Advisory Groups or Committees in guiding equity work
● Ability to be assertive and act with tact when faced with non-compliance issues.
● Ability to demonstrate a leadership role as a part of the collaborative team effort
● Strong understanding of the legislative process and knowledge of bill development and implementation
● Preference may be given to bilingual candidates.
Compensation Package:
Compensation for this position is $88,632-$136,440 depending on experience (*$94,788-$145,932 if you are a member of Oregon PERS).

● Paid days off –

o Progressive vacation leave accrual, starting at 10 hours per month, with increases every 5 years
