PRIMARY FUNCTION: Instructs professional technical education classes in manufacturing technology and supervises student activities related to the above so that students develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes related to employment in the manufacturing occupations.
PURPOSE: Keeping within the law, board policies, and administrative rules, the primary responsibility of the teacher is in the instruction of students. Instruction refers to the teaching/learning process that includes student guidance and management, as well as a demonstration of skills and knowledge in subject area(s) to be taught. When required, the teacher will also contribute to total school planning in the areas of budgeting, curriculum, and evaluating programs.

The teacher builds appropriate relationships with students that foster a safe and supportive learning environment. The teacher provides the opportunity for each student to meet the state standards through sound instructional and assessment practices aligned with the vision of the Brookings-Harbor School District. The teacher provides opportunities for each student to develop socially, intellectually, emotionally, and physically. Provide for the health, welfare, and safety of all children.

REPORTS TO: Principal or Vice Principal

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Teaches occupational knowledge and skills in the areas of safety, machine processes, metal fabrication, welding, foundry, heat treating, cutting, communications, and career preparation.
2. Cooperates with other faculty in promoting activities of a Skills USA chapter. Serves as advisor for Skills USA if assigned.
3. Organizes and maintains an active manufacturing technology advisory committee.
4. Coordinates the placement, supervision, and evaluation of students on internship and cooperative work experience sites as assigned.
5. Matches activities and materials to individual and group skills and needs.
6. Designs or selects and uses planned sequences of instruction for the development of occupational skills and knowledge.
7. Ensures that instructional activities and materials are clearly related to District, school, program, and course goals and objectives.
8. Provides instruction based on designated instructional materials or develops alternate materials in prescribed District format.
9. Establishes and maintains an orderly and supportive classroom and laboratory environment in which students are actively participating and show respect for one another and for the teacher.
10. Maximizes time when students are paying attention and working on tasks directly related to the subject matter.
11. Conducts interesting and well-paced classes using a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and materials appropriate to the lesson.
12. Make sure students understand what to do before undertaking assignments.
13. Assesses, keeps track of, and provides feedback promptly and often to students on their progress and assignments.
14. Uses a grading system that is consistent, fair, and supportable.
15. Selects and requisitions required instructional equipment, supplies, and materials.
16. Ensures that materials and equipment are properly used, maintained and stored, and that inventory records are accurate and current.
17. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
18. Participates cooperatively in school, area, and district-wide activities.
19. Follows specified standards, policies, and procedures of the building and District.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Oregon Teaching Certificate valid for the assignment or Professional Technical Teaching License satisfying TSPC requirements for teaching professional technical courses in manufacturing technology.
• Professional Technical endorsement in Manufacturing Technology desired.
• Demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for employment in the metals trades.
• Demonstrated ability to relate positively with students, teachers, administrators, employers, parents, and the community.

Areas of Emphasis Depending on Professional Background:
• Ability to teach all levels of welding (Stick, MIG, TIG, etc.)
• Experience in the field of metals and manufacturing
• Knowledge of engineering principles or experience in the field
• Knowledge of engines (operations and repair) or experience in the field

WORKING CONDITIONS: The Teacher works primarily within the school building. Although the primary work is indoors, the Teacher frequently works outdoors supervising students, in variable weather conditions including inclement weather. Some teachers have assignments that are routinely outside, such as a Physical Education or Agriculture Teacher. The incumbent must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. The incumbent will need to walk quickly at times, as well as speak and hear in often loud environments.

The position involves a high level of interaction with students and families from multiple and diverse backgrounds many who have particular or unique needs. The mental demands on the Teacher are considerable. The incumbent must maintain control under stress, and must manage him/herself in the presence of emotionally challenging interactions with staff, students, and parents. Planning and assessing and communicating with students and families includes frequent, prolonged, and irregular hours including evening and weekend time.
