Bend-La Pine Schools welcomes applications of qualified persons interested in the position of principal at Ponderosa Elementary School. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Must hold, or be able to obtain, Oregon Administrative Licensure
Record of increasingly responsible positions in education
Successful teaching and administrative experience at the elementary school level
Clear understanding of IDEA, TAG and MTSS
Understanding of best practices in early literacy and mathematics
Understanding of CCSS and Smarter Balanced Assessments and the ability to use data to lead school improvement efforts
Effective management of school operations that support teaching and learning
Experiences with systems around equity and trauma-informed practices
Strong communication skills, with a special focus on being an exceptional listener, highly visible and approachable to help establish positive, collaborative working relationships with and among students, staff, parents/guardians
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Elementary school teaching experience
Elementary school administrative experience, especially large schools
Clear knowledge of elementary school scheduling, curriculum and systems
Highly knowledgeable regarding elementary school best practices and enriching curriculum to meet the needs of all learners
Professional experience with leading and building cultural inclusivity with an eclectic group of students; including, but not limited to, socio-economics, ability level, TAG, Life Skills, multi-lingual, identity and gender preference
Instructional leader with a focus on best practices and knowledge of special education programs
Understands and has experience in non-exclusionary practices for student behavior, including Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) and Restorative Justice practices
Supportive of professional development opportunities and trainings that provide staff collaboration
Listens to and advocates for staff and students
Humble, collaborative leader who values relationships with students, families and staff members
Clear, timely communicator with an open-door policy
Experience with building teams and creating a positive, professional, working environment for all
Ability to build and nurture relationships grounded in trust and compassion
ABOUT PONDEROSA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Ponderosa Elementary School opened its doors in the 2008-09 school year and is now home to is home to approximately 450 diverse, high achieving, learners who are engaged in a rigorous curriculum embedded in research and best practices in North East Bend. Ponderosa is situated on approximately 10 acres and is adjacent to Pine Nursery Park, which staff members utilize as an outdoor classroom, consisting of more than 200 beautiful acres with paved trails, a variety of playing fields, playgrounds and a pond stocked for fishing.
Students at Ponderosa are engaged in art, music, physical education, technology, project based learning and enrichment activities as part of their learning experience. There are strong supports for students with a wide range of learning abilities as Ponderosa and various measures of success are used to gauge academic achievement. With a commitment to positive relationship development through the practicing empathy, serving others and showing compassion, Ponderosa provides an environment for students to persevere through all challenges in a safe environment where risk taking is encouraged and celebrated.
Relationships provide the groundwork for instruction at Ponderosa Elementary, and staff members share their passion and desire to make a difference in the lives of students on a daily basis and welcome family and community engagement.
DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS
Bend-La Pine Schools is the fifth largest school district in the state. More than 17,500 students attend Bend-La Pine Schools and programs.
Bend-La Pine Schools boasts 35 schools: 17 elementary schools, two K-8 schools, two charter schools, seven middle schools and seven high schools.
Since 2000, students in Bend-La Pine Schools have continually scored higher on SAT tests than their peers nation- and statewide. Students taking the SAT earned an average score of 1598, 101 points higher than their peers nationwide in 2014.
Highly competitive extracurricular teams earned numerous state championships.
Staff award winners include Oregon’s Superintendent of the Year, Elementary Principal of the Year, High School Principal of the Year, Oregon Teacher of the year, and Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.
The community has passed five school construction bonds in the past 20 years, providing 17 new schools and supporting facility safety and equity, along with new instructional programs for students.
Strong collaboration and networking with the community exist through School to Careers program, Safe Schools Alliance, Family Access Network with a FAN advocate in each building, and partnerships with local Parks and Recreation districts, to name a few.
A private education foundation for Bend-La Pine Schools supports K-12 education in the community.
Volunteers provide over 95,000 hours to schools annually.
