About the District
Portland Public Schools (PPS), founded in 1851, is a PK-12 urban school district in Portland, Oregon. With more than 49,000 students in 81 schools, it is one of the largest school districts in the Pacific Northwest. At PPS, our mission is to provide rigorous, high-quality academic learning experiences that are inclusive and joyful. We disrupt racial inequities to create vibrant environments for every student to demonstrate excellence.
The Opportunity
Portland Public Schools is seeking a talented school leader with experience in leading an increasingly diverse school. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership practices that support collaboration, data-driven decision making, family and community engagement, innovation, and teamwork-oriented approaches, with a racial equity and equality-focused lens. The successful candidate will also demonstrate an awareness of the intersectional identities multilingual learners possess and the historical inequities they have experienced. The principal at Beverly Cleary K-8 will continue to establish a learning environment that promotes academic excellence and the personal growth of every student and staff member. This school principal position is under the supervision of the Office of School Performance and is supervised by the assigned Area Senior Director.
School Description
Beverly Cleary is a K-8 school serving over 600 students in the Grant Park neighborhood of NE Portland. Previously Beverly Cleary was one of the largest schools in the district, spread out over three campuses, but through enrollment and boundary changes, this year the entire school will be housed in the Fernwood building for the first time in over 20 years. Originally constructed in 1911, with significant additions added in 1978, Beverly Cleary has long been one of the most important centerpieces in the neighborhood. Renamed after renowned author Beverly Cleary, who lived in the neighborhood as a child and set many of her books within the Grant Park neighborhood, the school has an outstanding reputation for student excellence, creativity, and results.
The school is looking for a leader that can welcome all 600 students into the same building for the first time in a generation. In addition to building strong relationships with students, the principal will need to work alongside an exceptional and tenured staff, and partner with parents and guardians, who support a large and active volunteer base, Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and Foundation. The principal will need to be a strong communicator, instructional leader, and collaborative partner willing to grow and work alongside members of this amazing school community.
