Position Summary
The Athletic Director is responsible for providing outstanding leadership and communication in the development, organization, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the district’s athletic programs. The Athletic Director must work collaboratively with the building administration, maintenance department, students, parents, staff, coaches, and community members to promote co-curricular athletic programs that foster academic excellence, leadership, character, skill development, sportsmanship, and an understanding of the sport.
Essential Functions
Serve as District liaison with the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), officials organizations, community partners, parents, patrons, media and other school districts.
Responsible for oversight of district athletic programs to ensure adherence to all OSAA rules as well as District policies, including medical and safety requirements for all athletic teams.
Work with District leadership to set the vision and goals related to the district’s athletic programs.
Organize and administer the overall program of extracurricular athletics for OCSD, both intramural and interscholastic, including scheduling of events. Arrange field and facility practice schedules.
Provide leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members.
Collaborate with the district’s Title IX Coordinator to ensure adherence to rules and regulations. Stay current with changes to this law.
Assume general responsibility for proper supervision of home events and arrange for officials, team physicians, and policemen as required.
Oversee the arrangement of transportation for athletics participants, as well as meals for athletes and coaches where appropriate. Ensure details are arranged for visiting teams' needs.
Prepare and administer the athletic program budget. Requisition program supplies and equipment, and work with the fiscal department on purchase and bid of materials.
Work directly with the maintenance department with regards to all athletic facilities to ensure consistent communication with coaches and to ensure that overall maintenance and use of sports facilities meet district expectations.
Coordinate and support Unified sports programming.
Promote, organize, and oversee multiple athletic and community sports events to fully maximize district facilities for the benefit of OCSD and community partners.
Collaborate with building administrators on the development of a system for equitable and adequate fundraising and advertising. Monitor the effectiveness of the system and make adjustments as needed.
Develop, communicate, and implement appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities, coaches, participants, and observers.
Inspect district athletic facilities and fields for health and safety concerns and make recommendations for improvements.
Maintain necessary records and complete required paperwork in a specified time and manner both for the District and OSAA.
Establish a district-wide system to track and ensure that all student athletes are eligible, both physically and academically, are appropriately insured, and have paid fees.
Support coaches in monitoring attendance and academic progress of athletes to ensure continued OSAA eligibility.
Administer the insurance program covering school athletes and assume responsibility for processing of reports and claims.
Collaborate with building administrator on the hiring of coaching positions; ensure that all paid coaches complete required hiring steps prior to beginning assignment.
Ensure coaching staff complete all mandatory training prior to beginning coaching assignment.
Establish and maintain a process to ensure that all athletic volunteers complete the application and criminal history background check process prior to beginning assignment.
Maintain a current coach roster in cooperation with Human Resources to ensure appropriate compensation to hired athletic staff.
Collaborate across departments to coordinate all athletics related services (ticket takers, announcers, event managers, etc.)
Foster positive school/community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
Plan and supervise an annual recognition program for school athletes.
Develop and/or maintain coaches handbook with input from District administration.
Serve as the first point of contact on athletic related personnel complaints.

Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required.

Follow all District policies, work procedures, and reasonable requests by proper authority.
Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, and District patrons.
Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of OSAA rules and regulations.
Knowledge of first aid and safety/training practices as they apply to athletics.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct a comprehensive secondary athletic program aimed at ensuring students have a competitive and healthy athletic experience.
Ability to lead improvement efforts toward identified program targets by motivating and mentoring coaches and facilitating systemic change strategies.
Ability to exercise independent judgment while adhering to prescribed policies and procedures and perform the essential functions of the position with minimal supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships and work in partnership with supervisors, other staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to plan, organize, and manage a variety of programs and projects. Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines and follow up on assignments with a minimum of direction and under stressful circumstances.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to remain calm, deliberate, and tactful in stressful and emotional situations. Will be required to interact with staff, students, and community members who are upset, angry, or distraught. In such interactions, the employee must be able to maintain control, decorum, and professionalism.
Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small group situations to students, parents and other school staff.
Ability to demonstrate professionalism in dress, speech and manner appropriate to the assignment and work setting.
Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Ability to follow district policies and procedures at all times.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree from accredited college or university.
Minimum five years of working in a leadership role as a coach or educator.
Extensive background in both men's and women's athletic, inter- and intramural activities.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Demonstrated commitment to equity in athletic and co-curricular opportunities for students.
Able to work extensive hours. After hours work is routine and expected.
Successful completion of criminal history records check, as required by law.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual Spanish-English.
Valid Oregon administrative license (will increase salary)
This position is 1.0 FTE; 240 days per year.
Salary range: $115,793 - $128,659 (without administrative license)
