The primary purpose of this position is to lead the Oregon Department of Education, performing through an equity lens many of the acts and duties of the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction as designated by the Governor. The position administers programs and funds that affect more than 570,000 K-12 Oregon students enrolled in public education. The position also provides education policy advice to the Governor. This is a highly visible, politically sensitive position that requires a great deal of energy and commitment to the reform efforts in Oregon public schools.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Master’s Degree or higher in education, administration, leadership or closely related field -AND- minimum three years of experience as an executive leader of a public school district -AND- five years of experience in the administration of an elementary school or a secondary school.

Requested Attributes:

Ability to meet strategic objectives established by the Governor and Legislature for Oregon public education system.

Experience establishing short- and long- term strategic goals, budgets and staffing decisions using an equity, diversity and inclusion lens and anti-racist stance in support of an agency’s mission.

Awareness of national and worldwide education system design efforts in order to make informed decisions regarding which approach should be embraced, rejected or modified for the Oregon model.

Experience collaborating with culturally and individually diverse groups. This position must have an ability to solicit, honor, and value viewpoints of Tribes, communities of color, disability advocates, immigrants, those without unhousing and other historically marginalized Oregonians.

Strength in systems thinking and ability to work cross-departmentally to achieve measurable improvements in student outcomes.

Deep understanding of historical educational decisions impacting today’s learning environments and an active learning approach to current movements seeking to impact inclusive content, access, and learning environments for all Oregon students.
