Life Skills Teacher - Elementary School

Manages the total instructional program for emotionally disturbed students in individual and group behavior skills and social-emotional growth. Teachers work with individual teachers, counselors, support personnel, parents, teaching assistants, volunteers, community agencies, and referring school personnel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
Writes or designates instructional objectives for each student and writes or selects prescriptive programs for each student consistent with the objectives and with the needs established in the original Individual Education Plan. The program shall include: 1) designated behavioral objectives, 2) materials to be used, 3) instructional cues, 4) a record keeping system, 5) designation of feedback to child, and 6) program generalization.
Provides individual and group instruction to meet each student’s objectives, maintaining correct criteria on observational data, including cues, consequences and data collection.
Maintains daily continuous records on all instructional and behavior programs administered.
Supervises independent seatwork or free time activities of students, consequating acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
Conducts systematic probes or reviews of skills mastered by students.
Monitors student progress in integrated activities, such as recess, lunch, extracurricular activities, classroom placement on a short-term basis, part-time at home school, and other areas where interaction with regular class peers offers an opportunity for integration and application of skills developed in the self-contained classroom setting.
Supervises classroom instructional aide as specified on the aide observation form.
Works with student services and the building personnel to see that objectives in the student’s Individual Education Plan are met.
Assesses student achievement on an ongoing basis through the use of formal and informal testing as well as maintaining appropriate assessments and other evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.
Assesses student abilities in relation to desired and/or agreed upon educational goals, objectives, outcomes, and perceived or identified disability or impairment.
Assigns work to and oversees instructional assistants and volunteers.
Manages the behavior of students in the instructional setting to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process.
Maintains appropriate licensure, authorization, certifications, and/or training hours as required.
Displays a sense of humor which does not rely on sarcasm or embarrassment.
Encourages honesty and respect.
Is tolerant of colleagues and students.
Treats all students fairly, with courtesy, personal dignity and respect to individual differences.
Is free from habits which detract from effective teaching.
Demonstrates a personal interest in the achievement of each student.
Creates and maintains a classroom and/or instructional environment that is attractive, healthful, safe, conducive to learning, and ensures that materials are accessible to students and in good condition.
The teacher works to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Professionally represents the school and the district in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students.
Uses good judgment in expressing opinions related to students, parents, and colleagues.
Communicates with parents/legal guardians and school staff regarding student expectations and keeps these individuals informed of student progress of same.
Maintains confidentiality with respect to students and their records and is knowledgeable of the legal rights of students and parents.
The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content.
The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.
Provides for or supervises physical care and feeding of students who because of a disability do not have feeding and/or self-help skills or abilities.
Maintains satisfactory personal health, except for temporary disability, has the emotional, physical, and mental abilities to meet the standards required of the position.
Collaborates with staff, parents, and other members of the team to develop Individual Educational Programs (I.E.P.’s) for each assigned student.
Coordinates educational activities with other professional staff, both school and non-school based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities.
Participates in the eligibility process, as assigned and after a student is determined eligible for special education services, participates in the intake process.
The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.
Adapts instruction in order to facilitate student achievement.
Executes planned classroom activities.
Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
Motivates and interests’ students in an approved curriculum.
Sets high, but achievable instructional and behavioral goals and be responsible for documenting their attainment.
Utilizes classroom procedures which encourage student response and participation.
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession.
The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.
The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.
Selects appropriate material according to individual student ability.
Performs required tasks in a self-contained, team, departmental or itinerant capacity as assigned.
Processes routine matters promptly and efficiently, such as grade reports, attendance, requisitions, and other required paperwork.
Promotes a positive attitude within the staff and toward the school in the community.
Reserves the right to differ on issues but will comply with decisions when made.
Works for improvement of school programs.
Makes effective use of resources: (a) materials, (b) human.
Utilizes a variety of instructional multimedia materials and technology to enhance learning.
Takes necessary and reasonable actions for protection of students and school property.
Adheres to district policies and complies with applicable district, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
Adheres to Jefferson School District Handbook and policies.
Attends work regularly and is punctual.
Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
Attends in-service trainings.
Attends staff meetings.
Fills out appropriate log(s), forms and paperwork, as required.
Reports issues to authorities as necessary, suspicious activity etc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) or a thorough working knowledge of custodial work, including cleaning methods and materials and the use of custodial equipment equivalent to that gained in at least one year of experience or a combination of education and experience. Previous experience working in a sanitation, custodial or maintenance position preferred.

Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Ability to interact with students and staff appropriately.

Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals and volume.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use, e-mail, internet software and word processing software.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students and teachers. Ability to safely operate variety of custodial/maintenance equipment. Ability to exercise good judgment.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District. Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card and valid Oregon Drivers License, bloodborne pathogen training and blood spill training.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally high depending upon the student population and activities. The employee may be exposed to a variety of conditions including: wet or humid, work near moving parts, work in high precarious places, a variety of cleaning agents, some hazardous chemicals and fumes, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock and vibration. Employee may be exposed to bodily fluids and bloodborne pathogens.
