JOB SUMMARY:

The Early Literacy Coach is a teacher who has both content and instructional expertise in reading and writing. The Early Literacy Coach will assist instructional staff by providing direct support and assistance in the classroom in the use of effective instructional strategies and programs to support literacy skills and standards, and support staff in the use of data to improve student achievement. The Early Literacy Coach will provide professional development that would include, but not be limited to, in-class coaching, observing, modeling of instructional strategies, guiding instructional staff in assessing student work, and developing instructional plans with teams of teachers and educational assistants. The Early Literacy Coach will support K-5 Professional Learning Communities in the area of ELA.

This is a grant funded position through Oregon Department of Education.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A valid State of Oregon Teaching License appropriate for the position with a Reading Intervention endorsement. Ability to obtain Reading Intervention endorsement required.
Demonstrated knowledge of state ELA standards.
Demonstrated skills in analyzing and using data and research for instructional decision-making.
Ability to participate in coaching professional development throughout the year.
Knowledge and experience with differentiated instruction.
Knowledge of Professional Learning Communities, including how to support collaborative teams in strengthening ELA.
Travel within District required daily.
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
The ability to follow oral and written directions.
The ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents and school personnel from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Proficient oral and written communication skills in at least one language, two languages preferred but not required.
Proficient in the use of computer and internet based applications, including but not limited to email and Google applications.
Ability to learn new systems as they are brought online by the District.
Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff and district patrons.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.
Annually pass the District’s required online training, CPR/First Aid, and other training provided by the District.
Maintain current licenses and certifications required for the position.
Follow and maintain knowledge of all applicable District policies and procedures; follow and maintain knowledge of all current state and federal laws or administrative rules pertaining to public school teachers.
Build relationships.
Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning; promotes high levels of achievement in relation to individual student abilities.
Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students; assists in the selection of curriculum, equipment and other instructional materials.
Designs and implements appropriate instruction of subject assigned in accordance with students, District curriculum and state standards.
Organize instruction using learning objectives and clearly defined student outcomes.
Selects teaching strategies that emphasize student involvement and engagement.
Develop clear classroom behavioral expectations.
Prepares report cards and progress reports; conferences with students, parents/guardians and other staff members; maintains open lines of communication.
Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, curriculum and instructional methods (example: PLC, Site Council).
Takes all responsible precautions to provide for the health and safety of students and to protect equipment, materials and facilities.
Participates in District provided professional development.
Attends work regularly and is punctual.
Attends staff meetings.
Early Literacy Coach:
Implements a collaborative coaching and learning approach.
Assists licensed teachers, in a collaborative model of observation, conversation, and lesson demonstration, to analyze and reflect on their practice to promote quality instructional practices.
Models effective differentiated instruction.
Provides individualized, classroom-based coaching with participants to support them in implementing good instructional practices.
Facilitates professional collaborative groups among teachers in which issues related to implementing effective content instruction are considered, current research and writing on effective practice is read and discussed, engaging lessons are planned, and student work and data are reviewed to inform instruction.
Facilitates grade-level or content area teams in which issues related to implementing effective content, skills and problem-solving instruction are considered, current research and writing on effective practice is read and discussed, engaging lessons are planned, and student work and data are reviewed.
Designs and leads comprehensive/balanced professional development in the subject or curricular areas.
Assist teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments.
Works collaboratively and collegially with other Teachers on Special Assignment, PLC Teams, Curriculum Directors, and other district specialists.
Provide effective communications with administrators, teachers, classified staff, and other school personnel to strengthen all aspects of the instructional program.
Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with school and district-level leadership to ensure rigorous, relevant curriculum and instructional practices that will increase student learning and achievement.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May supervise and direct the work of educational assistants and/or teacher aides. All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
