Helensview School is an accredited school that provides individualized instruction and specialized support services for youth ages 12-21 who have dropped out of school or are experiencing chronic attendance / behavioral issues. Helensview School provides multiple pathways to graduation with a standard diploma, academic, social service, and connection to post-secondary options. Students can access dual credit (on-campus agreements with multiple Colleges and Universities), Career and Technical Education (CTE) (6 approved programs of study including culinary, beats making and construction), and on-site job training through our student businesses. Helensview serves an ethnically diverse student population and seeks candidates with experience working in racially and ethnically diverse settings.
At Helensview 75% of our students identify as non-white and over 40% identify as Black or African American. We strongly value hiring staff who reflect the diversity of our students. We are particularly interested in candidates who hold a Bachelor's degree or higher and are interested in pursuing a Special Education teaching license through our Multnomah Educators Rising program. Sponsorship and on-site mentorship provided by Helensview and MESD.
Staff at Helensview are also encouraged to develop courses and curriculum related to their interests as part of our multidisciplinary approach to core-subject instruction and also to complement our elective course offerings.

POSITION PURPOSE:
Provides instructional services for students who require special education to meet their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) objectives. The students may have significant emotional, behavioral, and mental health struggles. Disabilities range from moderate to severe, and service categories may include Emotional Disturbance. Services are a mix of self-contained settings and placements, allowing the least restrictive environment options for students to be included in regular education or community access opportunities. You will have the opportunity to team teach in an engaging, small school environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assess students’ educational needs.
Provides daily instruction for students with disabilities.
Write Individual Educational Programs (IEPs).
Design, Create, and Implement Curriculum through a social justice lens.
Write instructional plans, record student performance, and modify instruction as needed.
Report pupil progress according to program procedures.
Establish and maintain appropriate student behavior.
Direct Educational and Classroom activities.
Works with staff, administration, and other agency personnel to establish an effective academic program.
Communicate cooperatively with parents, students, colleagues, building personnel, supervisors, community members, and others to address individual student needs.
Implement program-adopted crisis prevention/intervention strategies, including de-escalating procedures and physical interventions to avoid injuries.
Maintain records, and meet timelines.
Adhere to the school building, District, and Multnomah ESD policies and procedures.
Knowledge of a variety of instructional strategies for teaching students with disabilities.
Culturally Competent
Ability to plan and implement a quality instructional program for students with disabilities, monitor daily student progress, and collect student data;
Develop Individualized Education Plans that meet legal requirements.
Demonstrate a commitment to the MESD Equity Initiative by developing a thorough knowledge and application of the district Racial Educational Equity Policy and other board policies. Participate in staff development, in-services, and training related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and in K – 12 education; model appropriate behaviors; develop, recommend and implement improvements to human resources practices with awareness and understanding of their impact on a racially and culturally diverse community.
