BROOKINGS HARBOR SCHOOL DISTRICT 17-C

REGISTERED NURSE (RN)

PURPOSE: To strengthen the educational process through improvement and protection of the health status of students so they can benefit from the school experience.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent or designee

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s Mission.
Develops student specific health management plans after consultation with parents and health care providers
Consults with school teams regarding implementation of accommodations in the health management plan
Provides consultation in IEPs and 504s for students with health needs
Provides regularly scheduled medication reviews, submit reports and work with staff to address areas of concern
Provides required health room assistant training, Glucagon, Epinephrine and medication administration classes, and trains school staff on student specific health needs
Collaborates with vision/hearing/Dental team regarding school screenings, referrals and follow-up
Assists schools in the identification, control and prevention of communicable disease
Serves as a health consultant to schools
Delegates nursing tasks according to state nursing guidelines
Assists in on-going evaluation of health service programs
Provides consultation to schools regarding immunizations
Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students with communicable diseases according to communicable disease guidelines
Assists schools in communicating with parents about students with health needs
Directs the work of staff that provides medical services in schools.
Counsels with students concerning chronic health conditions, mental health issues, problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse, in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices
Serves as a resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction
Assists in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district
Maintains effective working relationships with school personnel, students, and parents. Effectively works and communicates with students, parents, and staff from diverse cultures or backgrounds including those who speak limited or no English.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid current Oregon RN License required
Valid Oregon Driver’s License
Valid First aid and CPR card
Education requirements to meet and maintain licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Oregon
Prior experience working with children with medical and health needs preferred
Prior experience working with children with special needs preferred
Work cooperatively with district staff, students, parents and the community
Knowledge of related State and Federal laws and regulations regarding the provision of health services to students in the school environment.
Experience providing nursing services to people ages 3-21 years old
Sensitivity to the unique needs of students by differentiating services and care, which include quality of life support; mobility, occupational and physical therapy expertise
Able to effectively recognize and attend to health factors which create obstacles for exceptional students
Able to design and deliver appropriate in-service, instruction and professional development training to school personnel in various medical/healthcare domains
Able to work effectively with staff, parents, medical professionals, and any other personnel to coordinate and implement appropriate school-based health care plans
Effective time management skills for organizing and managing services for students on the caseload
Effective practices of collecting data to monitor student care in accordance with individual health plans
Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining up to date health care plan documentation
Able to certify and delegate medical responsibilities to staff; which involve seizure, feeding, and other medical protocols
Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPPA and FERPA laws
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The RN works primarily within a school, attending to the medical needs of a child or children. The work environment will frequently include moderate to loud noise. The work environment may include exposure to unpleasant interior temperatures, dirt, and communicable diseases.

The RN may at times accompany a child or children throughout the school day, which may include spending time outdoors in variable weather including inclement weather; riding a school bus; and moving throughout the school campus during the school day. The RN will attend to the medical needs and personal hygiene needs of the student or students.

Work Year: 10-month, school calendar.
