Job Title:  Athletic Trainer

Salary Range:  Licensed Salary Schedule

Reports to:  Athletic Director

Please note that this position is 190 days with 5 paid holidays, paid sick leave and paid flexible personal leave (3 days per year).  If hired after the start of the school year, days and leave are pro-rated.  The McMinnville School District provides generous personal and family benefits including medical, dental and vision coverage.

Job Summary:

Provides specialized athletic training services to student athletes as a member of the athletic

health care team in consultation with a licensed physician in accordance with state practice act.

Athletic training services include: wellness and injury/illness prevention, initial screening and

evaluation, immediate and emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation which may include

modalities as well as developing treatment programs for injured athletes.  

The Athletic Trainer is present at practices and games to provide evaluation, assessment,

prevention, and rehabilitation of athlete’s injuries and care. The Athletic Trainer is a member of

the athletic health care team in consultation with a licensed physician. The nature of the work

requires adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations including established medical

procedures and federal and state laws. The incumbent works independently and interfaces daily

with coaches, school staff, student/athletes, parents, and other healthcare professionals.

Because this job involves frequent interactions and quick decision-making in stressful situations

the position requires a high level of professional decorum, calm, and ability to act as a role model

to young people.

 
Essential Job Functions:

Attends multisport athletic contests and practices as scheduled with the Athletic Director. Observes participating athletes to evaluate movement patterns and body mechanics that could predispose athletes to injury. Responds to injuries/illnesses that occur as a result of participating in activities and/or events.

Researches, plans, implements, and ensures that appropriate action plans are in place to prevent athletic injury and illness and that these action plans are in accordance with other established athletic policies and procedures as well as state law.

Monitors environmental conditions to decrease the risk of environmental illness due to heat, cold, lightening, air quality and wind. Helps enforce guidelines from the National Federation of High School Athletic Associations (NFSHS) and the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) with regards to hazardous weather recommendations.

Responsible for concussion management, including notifying school personnel, communicating with outside medical professionals and parents.

Assesses wrestler body composition in conjunction with Oregon’s Wrestling Weight Monitoring Program to determine minimum wrestling weight.

Supplies and maintains a safe and efficient athletic training room.

Readies medical equipment for game day.  Serves as a resource for coaches in order to select appropriate team protective equipment and devices.

Conducts initial assessment of an athlete's injury or illness to determine a professional diagnosis, activity limitation or restrictions, develop a treatment plan, and/or to determine whether the athlete should be referred to physicians for further diagnostic testing and treatment.

Keeps medical records and eligibility forms on file and makes sure they travel with the team assigned.

Assesses athletes to evaluate the efficacy of an athlete’s treatment, reports the progress to coaches and physicians when appropriate, and makes modifications to the athlete’s treatment program as needed.

Keeps confidential, accurate training records, including injury/accident reports and treatment notes.

Assists coach to provide first aid information.  Provides education to students and parents in the areas of sports injury prevention and care.

Establishes an annual budget necessary for the implementation of the training program.

Gives medical attention.

Calls parents when any serious injury occurs to an athlete under his/her supervision.

Attends clinics and keeps abreast of current trends in the care and prevention of athletic injuries.

Educates students to become student trainers for the purpose of using student trainers at athletic events.

Provides a year-end inventory.

Reports to the head coach any changes that occur in medical attention or rehabilitation of athletes.

Responsible for being familiar with the school/district policies and procedures which govern the work.

Prompt and regular attendance is required.

 
Other Job Functions:

Performs other tasks as assigned.

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Participates in various meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.

 
Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:

Annual training in Bloodborne Pathogens, First Aid, Student Boundaries, etc.

Trainer license required. BOC Certification and Oregon Health Licensure

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the human body.

Participation in sports medicine clinics.

Ability to establish good rapport with students. 

Ability to administer proper first aid and evaluate athletic injuries.

Knowledge of equipment, how to properly fit and care for it.

Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations pertaining to equipment.

Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously as a team member.

Ability to plan, organize, and work without close supervision.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District personnel and the public.

Maintains confidential information and the privacy of District staff, students, and families.

Carries out work responsibilities effectively under pressure of deadlines, interruptions, and new or emergency situations.

Ability to work with a diverse population.

Ability to respect confidential information.

Computer skills to include use of word processing programs, database programs and the Google Suite of products. 

 
Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; and use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.                                        

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.  The noise level in the work environment varies but is usually moderate.

Terms of Employment: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of coaching staff.
