The Assistant Principal for Special Program-Head Start shares primary responsibility for educational leadership in the planning, implementation and assessment of all phases of the Head Start Education Component and for support, supervision and evaluation of the teaching staff.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)
• Promote understanding and commitment to establish program philosophy, mission and priorities, and adherence to District policies and procedures as stated in Education Operations Manual, Staff Handbook and other policy guidelines.
• Participate in the development and evaluation of educational programs; encourage and support implementation of instructional and specialized programs, assisting educators and others to pilot such efforts when appropriate; promote the use of technology in teaching and learning process.
• Participate in the support of orientation and training for new teachers regarding component expectations and responsibilities involved in implementation of Education Operations Manual requirements and individualizing processes.
• Participate in support of instruction by providing professional development to strengthen employees’ knowledge and skills for eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in achievement; monitor student progress, and use assessment and accountability tools to eliminate the effects of institutional racism.
• Supervises, evaluates, and supports certified and classified program staff in accordance with District and contractual guidelines.
• Promote a positive, safe and caring climate for learning; deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds; communicate effectively with students, staff and parents.
• Reviews classroom documentation, records, files and planning formats ongoing.
• Monitors facilities ongoing to ensure safe, functional and attractive learning environments.
• Participates in interview and selection of Education component staff.
• Promotes collegiality, peer-mentoring and curriculum sharing throughout the Education component.
• Assumes primary responsibility for ongoing review and revision of the Education Operations Manual, Education forms, and component job descriptions.
• Collaborates with community partners.
• Supports the work of all Head Start teams and committees.
• Reports to Head Start Parent Policy Council as requested by Director.
• Responds to questions and concerns from parents regarding curriculum and classroom practice.
• Attends professional development training, conferences and workshops pertaining to aspects of the Education Supervisor role.
• Participates in child Team Consultation sessions.
• Attends staff meetings.
• Contributes to administrative meetings for overall planning and communication with Director and Managers.
• Completes report information and compiles component data when needed.
• Works ongoing with program staff and district Special Education personnel to support and facilitate collaborative services.
• Assists with annual Education Service area self-assessment process and participates in external reviews of component operations.
• Supports Head Teachers in training, supervision and evaluation of classroom staff teams.
• Assists in mediation of communication issues and problem-solving involving classroom staff.
• Coordinates and oversees special projects, activities and collaborations involving Education Services.
• Assesses needs for classroom equipment, materials and furnishings ongoing and prepares component purchase recommendations for the Director. Tracks Education Service area budgets.
• Coordinates dispersal of books and materials to classrooms ongoing.
• Assists and supports Head Start Director in all related areas as needed or requested.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
• Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education
• Teacher Certification
• A State of Oregon issued Professional Administrator License is required at the time of appointment.
• Minimum 5 years of Head Start or Preschool Teaching.
• Experience working in a richly diverse school community and environment.
• Multilingual skills.
• Knowledge of Head Start philosophy and regulations.
• Evidence of the ability to work collaboratively with a management team.
• Experience in a PK – 12 school leadership position with demonstrated results in improving academic performance.
