Willamina School District is seeking .60 FTE Literacy Coach for middle/high school.
Job Description:
The literacy coach is an educator who works with teachers in middle and high schools to improve literacy instruction across all content areas. They train teachers in research-based reading, writing, and comprehension strategies, often focusing on how to integrate these skills into subjects like math and science, and help analyze student data to improve outcomes. The role is crucial for ensuring all students develop the literacy skills needed for academic success, career readiness, and life beyond school.
Key responsibilities:
Teacher support: Provide one-on-one coaching, professional development, and model research-based literacy practices for all subject-area teachers.
Curriculum alignment: Help teachers implement or develop curriculum that aligns with literacy standards and student needs across the curriculum.
Data analysis: Collaborate with teachers to analyze student work and assessment data to identify learning gaps and develop targeted interventions.
Building capacity: Foster a school-wide culture of literacy where all teachers understand their role in teaching reading, writing, and comprehension.
Discipline-specific skills: Help teachers understand and teach the unique literacy demands of their specific content area, such as the specialized vocabulary and reading skills in science or history.
Qualifications
Education: A master's degree in education, reading, or a related field is often required.
Experience: Significant experience as a secondary teacher is essential.
Skills: Strong skills in communication, collaboration, and data analysis, as well as a deep understanding of literacy theory and pedagogy.
Importance of the role
Addressing the secondary literacy gap: Adolescent learners often need specialized literacy instruction beyond what was taught in elementary school, especially in content areas where literacy is foundational to understanding complex texts and concepts.
Supporting non-literacy teachers: Many subject-area teachers lack formal training in teaching reading and writing. A literacy coach provides essential support and professional development to meet this need.
Improving student outcomes: By improving teaching practices, coaches directly impact student achievement, ensuring students can demonstrate their knowledge and succeed in their coursework and future endeavors.
