Developing language is a team effort: The critical role of content teachers in ELD

The research on English language acquisition states that developing a language takes between five and seven years. It requires lots of practice in and outside of school. During our time together, we will go beyond effective strategies to examine how we can strategically support language in content classes. We will unpack a lesson to uncover the pedagogical moves that function alongside explicit language instruction to pinpoint specific ways all students benefit when we center ML/EL students. Participants will also examine their school system’s goals to articulate how language is central to student achievement across all layers of the system.
